In July 2020, the Department for Transport introduced new design guidance for cycle schemes, known as LTN 1/20. Schemes must comply with this guidance in order to secure government funding to support construction. The new guidance requires designers to significantly improve the safety of cyclists and create more cohesive and legible schemes. The Clough Road scheme is designed to segregate cyclists as much as possible from moving traffic and other users of the carriageway and footway and create a safe route to encourage cycling whilst minimising impact on other road users.
The proposals include creation of a kerb-segregated, two-way cycle track along Clough Road, between Beverley Road and Stoneferry Road.
This would run along the north side, and parts of the south side of, Clough Road to provide a direct, safe and attractive facility, segregated from pedestrians and traffic. There will also be parts where shared use is necessary, however these should be of a generous width to avoid conflict between pedestrians and cyclists.
Existing traffic lanes and right turn lanes into the retail and employment sites along Clough Road will be retained.
