Bus Lane Operating Times

Bus Lane Operating Times

In summer 2020 the bus lane operating times were extended to all day (Monday - Saturday,  7.00am – 6.30pm) to improve bus journey times and support bus reliability.

The change in bus operating times also enabled us to introduce cycle lanes that separates cyclists from the main flow of traffic and provide them with a safer space that would encourage more active travel.

The Council received money from the government to support these changes, to help improve bus reliability and to develop cycle schemes.

Any changes to bus lane operating times may impact future funding.

The bus lane operating times can affect the reliability, punctuality and frequency of bus services, making journey times longer and more unpredictable when bus lanes are not operating.

This requires more resource from bus operators, and increases costs, which may lead to less frequent services.

Data from Humberside police shows that whilst the number of cyclists injured as a percentage of all casualties on our roads has increased overall, the number of collisions within bus lanes involving cyclists since the extended operating times were introduced has reduced.

What will any changes mean?

The cycle lane markings will stay in place regardless of whether the bus lane operation times are changed or remain the same.

If bus lane operating times are reverted to peak times, this may:

reduce the safety of cyclists

reduce or remove future funding from the Department for Transport.

What is the Council asking me?

We would like to understand:

 - your views about the bus lane operating times

 - which of the routes into / out of the city with bus lanes you use

when and how you use them

Your views will help us to make decisions about bus lane operating times.

Please take the time to complete the questionnaire which can be accessed by the following link.
